On the final day of the Hot Rod Power Tour we woke up in Wichita, Kansas and started the final trek to the Kansas Speedway. It was bittersweet...yes it was exciting to have made it the whole way as a Long Hauler, but how could this amazing week be over already? As a first timer I know I will be doing it again and again in years to come and if you are at all considering participating in the Power Tour, take my advice and do it, you will have no regrets! Along the way I learned a few lessons and now I would like to share them with you in this Beginners Guide to the Hot Rod Power Tour.

1. Book your hotels as close to the venue as possible
A few times I thought I was being smart by getting us ahead of city traffic, but in doing so you miss out on all the parking lot parties, which is the time when everyone shares their road stories. You all get to the same destination each night but somehow each journey is unique in its own special way.

2. Prepare for the heat
Damn it was hot! We had a cooler stocked with water, beer, and ice at all times and it was a life-saver. Yes there are vendors at each event but you never know when you'll get stuck on the side of the road!

3. Bring an awesome road companion
I would say bring a good navigator but mine sucked at GPS and directions. Luckily, the Power Tour organizers had it covered and gave us detailed directions. You will be in a car with this person for a week, so plan wisely. I made the right choice and my week was amazing. I saw others that failed at this task and their faces told the story—they were miserable!

4. Talk to everyone!
Everyone is there for the same reasons—the love of adventure and cars—so you know you have something in common with everyone! I met some of the most amazing people on the Tour and I am already counting down the days to when I will see them again on the road; I’m thinking around 350 until HRPT 2017!

5. If you can fit it, bring it
If you're even thinking about bringing it, shove it in the trunk. Tools and spare parts are key. You may not need it but someone else might and it's always fun to be the person that saves the day. How many girls do you know that carry spare distributor roll pins? Well this girl does, and a couple from Florida were able to make it home because of it. Their distributor gear pin snapped and what could of been a costly repair was fixed right on the side of route 40.

Thanks for following along one of the greatest adventures I've had to date. The Hot Rod Power Tour should not be a bucket list item, and should be on your calendar as a non-negotiable every year!
