Jay Brown and his Shelby GT500 clone are currently holding the number one spot in the Modified Naturally Aspirated class at Drag Week 2015 with the only Ford Cammer engine in the entire 300-car field. Brown is well-known in Ford FE circles, continuing to tinker and improve Ford’s single-overhead cam 90-Day-Wonder more than 50 years after the engine was banned by NASCAR and was pressed into quarter-mile service with some of the biggest names in drag racing.

Brown’s engine began with a block from Shelby that he modified in order to fit a 4.5-inch bore. Because there’s no camshaft in the valley to interfere, Brown can run a huge 4.6-inch stroke to yield 585ci. Despite the engine’s size and its long stroke, Brown says it revs quickly, hitting the 7,500-rpm rev limiter on its way past its horsepower peak of 992hp at 6,900-rpm. After three days, Brown’s 8.91-second average puts him firmly on top of his class after Brad Dyer had to bow out with his second-place Nova that had been a formidable opponent.

The biggest issue Brown had thus far on Drag Week 2015 was a fuel starvation issue that only manifested when the car was on the track. He diagnosed an odd electrical gremlin with a wire on the fuel pump relay that would flex back from the acceleration forces during launch, turning the pump off. Luckily as he went through and checked the wires he found the culprit and Brown is working on his personal goal of making an eight-second pass at every track.
