19th Annual Ponies at the Pike Mustang and Ford Show
The Beach Cities Mustang Club’s yearly show has grown into a SoCal staple with more than 300 cars in attendance
After nearly 15 years of taking place at the Queen Mary in Long Beach, California, the Beach Cities Mustang Club has moved its annual show to the Pike, which is a 100-year-old historical district near downtown Long Beach and just across the water from the QM. The September 27, 2015 show was graced with picture-perfect blue skies and, of course, packed with hundreds of Mustangs of just about every year from 1965 to 2015. And that includes four Mustang IIs in attendance, some of which you will find several shots of here.
Besides the IIs, we covered the gambit on all the vintage Mustangs on display including a number of interesting Shelbys, an outrageous ’67 fastback powered by a 427 SOHC Cammer motor, some eternally cool ’65-’66 K-code cars, and two cars brought to the show by our buddies Dave Carrillo and Ray Porter. You will see their two cars parked side by side in our coverage; Dave owns the yellow ’70 Mach 1 that sports R-code 428 Cobra Jet power with a four-gear, while Ray has the freshly-restored Acapulco Blue ’69 Mach 1 equipped with a 351W and an FMX automatic.
Other cars of note in our photo gallery include Glen Martyn’s spectacular ’66 fastback, which received the Best-of-Show award at last year’s Ponies at the Pike show. Powered by a 351C sourced from a De Tomaso Pantera, we’re planning a full feature on this car on Mustang360.com as well as in a future print issue of Mustang Monthly. And as with most Mustang shows, there is usually a nice selection of other Ford classics on hand including Falcons, Fairlanes, and Galaxies. A standout at the show was Paul Leone’s mint 63 ½ Galaxie powered by a Tri-Power 406. Cool stuff for sure.
All in all, BCMC club founder and president Jon Schultz never fails to put on one of the top Mustang shows in California. And with an ideal location in Long Beach, it’s an event definitely worth checking out whenever you have a chance. Check out bcmc.net for all club info and future show dates.
