The Great Race is a nine-day, 2,400-mile rally and it’s intended for vintage cars. The route changes every year, and this year’s Route 66-based route was extremely popular, as the 120-car field sold out in a matter of months. A Route 66 road trip is on every car guy’s bucket list, but this was more than a road trip—it was an intense competition. For many, the goal was simply to finish the race, crossing the finish line on the Santa Monica Pier, nine days after launching from historic Kirkwood, Missouri, just outside of St. Louis. The rules require all cars to be 1972 and older, and a total of seven classic Ford Mustangs entered the race, which paid out more than $150,000 in cash to the top finishers in five divisions.

While 2,400 miles in nine days is tough enough for a vintage car, these diehard enthusiasts battled with varying elevations, extreme heat and a challenging course. All seven Mustangs finished the race, while nearly 20 of the 120 registered cars dropped out due to mechanical issues. While the harsh conditions and route shook down the field, it also provided beautiful scenery, with lots of historic locations and even a couple National Parks. The 2015 Great Race traveled through Missouri, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and California, seeing many of the scenic Route 66 landmarks along the way. Next year, the Great Race tackles the Lincoln Highway, from San Rafael, California to Moline, Illinois. Check out www.greatrace.com for more information.
