When it comes to serious car action movies, most of the vehicles used are far from factory and require heavy modifications and testing before they even make it to the big screen. That certainly holds true for the highly-anticipated Dreamworks film Need For Speed, which is based on the most successful racing game ever with 140 million copies sold.

In the video, check out the behind-the-scenes of these vintage American cars going under the knife for some serious fabrication work on top of major modern heart transplants. A lot of work is necessary to ensure that these vehicles have what it takes to compete against each other onscreen.

“What you see here are some of the vintage American muscle cars getting redone with the new engines to give them the speed,” says Steve Saleen, businessman and former race car driver.

After receiving modern power, suspension upgrades, and the works, the cars go through rigorous testing at the famous road course track at Willow Springs to make sure that every option has been explored to so that these cars perform faster and better each time.

With a release date of March 14, 2014, Need For Speed will soon grace big screens everywhere. While you wait for the full-length feature, see for yourself the work needed to make sure that these vintage cars will knock your socks off.
