Special Occasion

Every so often for a special date, 19-year-old Brandon Ensslin, from Galt, California, gets to drive his dad's '68 GT/CS California Special. "The Mustang is a California original with 54,000 miles, 289 with four-barrel carb, and automatic transmission," says father Chris Ensslin. "I would not hesitate driving it from Sacramento to Los Angeles." Attesting to the car's heritage, Chris has the original window sticker, sales agreement, and black California plates. Adding to the patina is an original "Vote for Nixon" bumper sticker.

$10 a Week

Ever since Bill George was 13 years old, he's wanted a '66 Mustang. During his 22-year career as an aircraft electrical mechanic with the Canadian Air Force, Bill put away $10 from his weekly paycheck to save for his Mustang. When he retired from the CAF, he had $11,400 and began the search for his retirement project. "I spotted a '66 hardtop at a local show but the $14,000 asking price was out of my budget," Bill tells us. "Five months later I called to offer $10,000. He said, ‘How about $11,000?' I told him I'd be right there." Over the past six years, Bill has upped his weekly outlay to $20 a week for the Mustang's restoration.

Low-Mileage '05

Roland Savoy goes back a long way with Mustang Monthly. The longtime employee of Orlando Ford dealerships once "borrowed" a new '83 Mustang GT to drag race against editor Donald Farr's '70 Boss 302 ("Boss Showdown," May 1983). Today, Roland owns a '05 Mustang GT with barely over 1,600 miles on the odometer. "I ordered it in January 2005 and took delivery five months later," Roland explains. "It was held up due to quality issues in the Flat Rock plant." Roland should know; he's spent 23 of the past 36 years at Ford or Lincoln dealerships, currently as the service manager for Central Florida Lincoln.

Bullitt Inspired

Douglas Hakes saw the movie Bullitt when he was in the Air Force. He liked Steve McQueen's Mustang so much that when he returned home from Vietnam, he purchased a Gulfstream Aqua '69 Mach 1 with the 351 Windsor four-barrel and four-speed. After many years and 135,000 miles, the Mach ended up sitting in Douglas' driveway. "My wife said, ‘Do something with it or get rid of it!'" Douglas says. So he rebuilt the Mustang himself, saving as many of the original parts as possible. Now it's a trophy winner at local Cliffside Park, New Jersey, shows.
