Horse Sense: The 2014 Carlisle Ford Nationals event is scheduled for June 6-8. Check it out at www.carsatcarlisle.com.

This was our third trek to the annual Carlisle Ford Nationals, a three-day event of vast proportions that had originally started out primarily as a swap meet for the classics. These days it has grown into a gathering for Fords and Ford fans of all ages.

Late-model Mustangs now seem to inhabit the majority of the show field, but this is far from just a static affair. Though the sprawling Carlisle Fairgrounds serves as the event's headquarters, off-site eighth-mile drag racing is also available on the schedule, and a police-escorted cruise to Carlisle's historic downtown is a Saturday night staple that sees the core streets closed off to all but FoMoCo's finest, for a few entertainment-filled hours of car-ogling and live music.

At the fairgrounds, a vibrant manufacturer's midway contains the usual eye candy and go-fast gear, with on-site parts installations now a growing trend aimed squarely at we late-model fanatics. Even over the brief span of our three visits, we've seen Ford Motor Company's corporate presence expand exponentially to the point where we suspect this has to be one of the major dates on the Blue Oval promotional calendar.

In early June, the Pennsylvania weather can be a bit of a wild card; this year, Friday was effectively washed out by a few inches of rain. That did nothing to dampen the crowds on a much drier Saturday, however, and it was all we could do to cover the vast acreage and snap a few photos to give you the gist of what this year's Carlisle Ford Nationals was all about.

Even greater plans are afoot for next year so, if you bleed blue, this might just be a great way to start off the summer of 2014. We hope to see you there.
