2013 NMCA West Coast Shootout - Wally World
NMCA West draws a stampede of ‘Stangs to its second big show in Pomona
Horse Sense: Unlike the Ford-only NMRA, ProMedia's NMCA (and NMCA West) drag-racing series gives all makes and models a chance to compete for NHRA “Wally” trophies. While NMCA events typically draw lots of Fox, SN-95, and New Edge Mustangs for several of its heads-up and index classes, keeping track of the ones sporting Brand-X engines under their hoods makes covering the mixed bag quite challenging. Of course, Mustangs powered by Brand-X won't appear in these pages—even if they win.
Sometimes it takes longer for new things to catch on. Many of you who race in the major Mustang/Ford or all-makes drag racing sanctions know this is especially true with regard to class rules or race locations. Keeping things consistent typically keeps all parties happy. When participants are happy, events get better and better as time goes on.
This definitely is true for ProMedia's NMCA West drag-racing series. In May 2013, 500 racers beat a path to historic Auto Club Raceway at Pomona, California, ready to get it on at the sanction's third-annual West Coast Shootout. While the race at Pomona is only the second throwdown on the four-event schedule, it's without question the most prestigious clash of the year for NMCA West racers.
Pomona is a track that, for many years, had only been used bi-annually for the NHRA's season-opening and season-ending events. Receiving a coveted Wally trophy for a win at this famous quarter-mile is arguably every drag racer on the planet's dream—one your scribe achieved in 2012.
Your author, along with 'Stangbangers racing in Granatelli Motor Sports Mustang Madness and at least five other NMCA West heads-up or index classes, returned for the 2013 race with their sights set on winning it all. This report details the true-blue Mustang highlights from Pomona, including your tech editor's effort to repeat as Mustang Madness champ!
