As one of the first shows to hit the calendar each year, the Silver Springs Ford & Mustang Roundup in Silver Springs, Florida, is a popular launching point for newly finished car projects. Each year we see some of the finest classic Fords, well-cared-for drivers, and interesting trucks, street rods, and custom projects, and every one of the proud owners has a great story to tell about their build. One of the best things about the Silver Springs show is its laid-back approach, with no formal parking by year or class and no formal judging. Whether you're a spectator or participant, you'll always see something interesting and hear all sorts of great stories. Sponsored by National Parts Depot, Mustang & Fords, and Mustang Monthly, the show encompasses a three-day weekend that includes a Pony Trails cruise, dyno pulls, and a tour of NPD's facility on Friday, with the main show inside the historic Silver Springs Adventure Park on Saturday and Sunday. The Roundup is a huge draw every year because National Parts Depot (located just down the street from Silver Springs Adventure Park) pays for the first 1,000 cars to register for the show. Each year, registration fills up to that 1,000 mark earlier and earlier (cars after the 1,000 mark pay just $17 for the event, which is still a bargain). It's great to have a show in January, with more than 1,000 Mustangs and Fords of all years, but that's the benefit of being in Florida. However, the Sunshine State doesn't always live up to its name. There has been some nice weather every other year or so, but usually the weekend can be a bit on the chilly side. For most people, that just means an extra jacket or maybe a hat. Unfortunately, there was some rain in the forecast this year, but that didn't stop the show from having a record-breaking car count of 1,103 cars on Saturday. Although the skies opened up late Saturday afternoon (hurting the returning car count on Sunday), it was still a great show. We're always amazed during the awards ceremony when NPD's Rick Schmidt asks for the farthest distance traveled, and we hear people calling out "Nevada," "New Jersey," and even "Canada." While setting up our Factory... While setting up our Factory Five Cobra replica for display on Saturday morning, I received a call from my wife, who was at the hotel, saying our daughter was ill. This meant I had to leave the park for a brief time. On the way out of the park, I spied Jacksonville, Florida's Bruce Ross and his immaculate '56 F-100, and had to stop for a quick photo. What a sweet-looking truck! Although you don't need A/C... Although you don't need A/C in January, having it in August is a lifesaver in Florida. Addd power steering and a dual master cylinder brake setup and you've got a great driver! Red upholstery and carpet... Red upholstery and carpet are a grea match with the yellow exterior. A few gauges, gas, brake and a steering wheel are all you need. After a trip to the corner... After a trip to the corner drug store, I headed back to the show. While I was gone, Web Producer Greg Clark had taken over some of the photography duties and snagged some really nice rides. For instance, this '60 Fairlane... For instance, this '60 Fairlane is something you don't see every day, and Frank McLaughlin of The Villages, Florida, has it in great shape. Silver Springs is well known... Silver Springs is well known for its glass bottom boat rides. With the clear spring water, you can see nearly 100 feet below the surface in some places. You can even see the set for the movie "Creature From The Black Lagoon" during your ride. It's often difficult to find... It's often difficult to find a clean example of the Mustang II, but we're lucky enough to usually see several fine examples each year while walking the Silver Springs show field. On Saturday, we spotted Kirk Champion's '77 hatchback sitting pretty. The II was spotless, and Champion, of Inverness, Florida, had the hatch decked out with louvers. The roof panels were removed for a better look at the interior. Also hard to find is a white... Also hard to find is a white King Cobra. Available only in '78, the King Cobra has the distnctive snake decal on the hood. This Custom 300 is owned by... This Custom 300 is owned by Manny Jimenez of Miami, and is powered by a stout-looking big-block. Other than the reproduction chrome Bullitt wheels, the 300 appears just about the same as when it left the factory back in 1957. Manny took home the award for Best Ford. I'm sure he was busy all weekend wiping the spectator drool off of the car... ...which sports a 428 CJ Ram-Air... ...which sports a 428 CJ Ram-Air powerplant, Black Jade paint, and is loaded with great cruising options... ...including A/C, power disc... ...including A/C, power disc brakes, power steering, a C6 trans, and a 3.00 Traction-Lok. Mustang & Fords Editor's Choice William Horrell, Effingham, SC '64 Fairlane 500 Sports Coupe We spotted William Horrell's Fairlane under some protective plastic during one of Saturday's rainstorms. After the skies dried, we watched as William peeled back the plastic, exposing the pristine flanks of the Fairlane, and we knew we had to take a closer look. The Fairlane was the proverbial little-old-lady's car with just 59,000 miles on the odometer when William purchased it in Galivants Ferry, South Carolina, with the idea of having it be a nice weekend cruiser. That meant no huge rubber out back or 12:1 big-block underhood. William dropped in a mild 5.0 from a '94 Mustang GT with enough power to make the Fairlane move out with authority. Backing the 5.0 is an AOD four-speed overdrive automatic. The EFI system uses a Rock Valley stainless fuel tank with internal fuel pump. For suspension William chose a Rod & Custom Motorsports Mustang II setup in front, giving the car a 2-inch drop, disc brakes, and rack-and-pinion steering. Out back is a 3.50-geared 9-inch flanked with a set of leaf springs and gas shocks. There are also 11-inch discs at all four corners. Inside, the original buckets and console are complemented by a polished Flaming River aluminum column-shift tilt column. Vintage Air A/C cools the interior on hot Carolina days. William performed all of the work himself except for the headliner and seat recovering, and the replating of several of the chrome appointments, which was handled by Advanced Plating in Nashville, Tennessee. The completed project is used for cruising, car shows, and just general driving enjoyment. The Porsche Guards Red PPG single-stage paint, topped with urethane clear, brings attention to William wherever he goes in his Fairlane, and that's just fine with him. | NPD 14th annual Ford & Mustang Round Up Car Show Winners | Balloted Awards | Name | Model | Color | 1964-1/2 to 66 Mustang | Don Zimmer | 66 Mustang | emberglow | 1967 to 68 Mustang | Scott Gould | 67 Shelby Clone | black | 1969 to 70 Mustang | Lori and Chad Stanich | 70 Mustang Grande | red | 1971 to 73 Mustang | Bill and Kathy Lindlau | 72 Mustang Convertible | red | 1974 to 86 Mustang | Tony Thompson | 78 King Cobra | white | 1987 to 93 Mustang | Kenneth Wear | 90 Mustang GT Convertible | black | 1994 to 98 Mustang | Gary Rosier | 94 Mustang GT | blue | 1999 to 2004 Mustang | Terri Setje | 2001 Mustang Convertible | yellow | 2005-up Mustang | Joan Hritzik | 2005 Mustang GT | black | Pantera | Ken & Laura Costa | 72 Pantera | Gulf blue & orange | 1965 to 70 Shelby | Frank Bowers | 67 GT500 | black | 2007-up Shelby | Andy Allen | 2007 Shelby GT500 | Grabber orange | Saleen | Wayne Blair | 2000 Saleen S281 | white | Falcon/Comet | John Kaiser | 63 Falcon Futura | red | Exotic | Nick Kintner | 67 Tiger | red | Cobra Replica | Mike Cheek | 65 Cobra | gray | Pre-1948 Ford | David Raffi | 41 Ford | green | Post-1948 Ford | Bob Patten | 56 Ford | orange and white | Street Rod | Joe Letts | 23 T | wineberry | Truck 1948-79 | Micheal DeFrancisco | 64 Econoline | white | Truck 1980-Present | Scott Robinson | 2001 F-250 | blue | T-Bird 1955-57 | Carl & Margaret Thompson | 56 T-Bird | black | T-Bird 1958-Present | Ray Rome | 62 T-Bird | pink | Cougar | Phil & Nancy Elder | 70 Cougar Eliminator | yellow | Maverick/Comet | Bill Roberts | 74 Comet | red | Roush | Don & Marilyn Franks | 2004 Stage 2 Convertible | orange | Best Mustang | Kathy Wear | 2007 Mustang GT Coupe | orange | Best Ford | Manny Jimenoz | 57 Ford Custom 300 | blue & white | Best of Show | Sonny Roberts | 93 Cobra | red |
Picking up the photo duty... Picking up the photo duty from Greg, I spotted Michael DeFrancisco's '64 Econoline pickup. The clean little truck from Inverness, Florida, took home the award for Best Truck 1948-'79. Panteras are straight-out... Panteras are straight-out sexy--Italian coachwork with brute Ford Cleveland power under the rear lid. We've seen them in every form from GT5 clones to stone stock and even modular powered. However, we've never seen one dressed up in Gulf colors until we came across the shining example of this '72 Pantera owned by Ken and Laura Costa of Eustis, Florida. The voters agreed as well, giving the car the Best Pantera award. The Falcon gang is always... The Falcon gang is always at Silver Springs in large numbers (as are the T-birds, Cougars, Mavericks, and other regional and national groups). The Falcon Club of America's current president, Chuck Beason, recently finished his '65 Falcon Sprint project and debuted it at Silver Springs. Nicely done, Chuck. We don't see enough '71-'73-based... We don't see enough '71-'73-based restomod Mustangs, and that's a shame because these Mustangs lend themselves to great-looking projects. Just take a look at what Ronald Clifton of De Leon Springs, Florida, did with his '72 coupe. It sports a bright paint job, Shelby wheels, custom bodywork (including front fender vents behind the wheels), and "Super Coupe R" graphics on the rear sail panel. Ronald has more work to do underhood, but this '72 is a promising restomod indeed. Every year, NPD brings out... Every year, NPD brings out a few cars from its private collection (Rick and Jim Schmidt have been collecting cars longer than many of us have been in the hobby). This time, their collection of Turnpike Cruisers and Skyliner Retractables graced the Silver Springs mansion stage. My favorite was this '57 Turnpike Cruiser with the rare 368 8V engine, A/C, pushbutton chassis lubrication, and memory seats. Wow, now that's an option list! In a surprise ceremony on... In a surprise ceremony on Saturday afternoon, Larry Dobbs, well known for creating Dobbs Publishing and Mustang Monthly magazine, was awarded the Lee Iacocca award for dedication to promoting our hobby and the American-car tradition. Mustang & Fords editor Mark Houlahan was also full of praise for Larry. It was Mustang Monthly's sister magazine at the time, Super Ford, that inspired Mark to take the journalism classes needed to get away from his mechanic job at the local Lincoln-Mercury dealership. Shown in the photo from left to right is Rick Schmidt of NPD; Donald Farr, Editor of Mustang Monthly; Larry Dobbs; Mark Houlahan, Editor of Mustang & Fords; and Jeff Ford, past editor of Mustang Monthly. Our Factory Five Cobra replica... Our Factory Five Cobra replica project made it back to Florida just days before the Silver Springs show. The guys at KR Performance and Restorations (www.krpandr.com) did an outstanding job on the paint work, and we thrashed throughout the week to get the project in near-finished form to display at the show. We have the interior to finish and a punch list to tackle, but we're almost done. Rancheros were the original... Rancheros were the original "crossover," and for more than two decades Ford made them on one model line or another. One of the most popular model runs was the Falcon-based Ranchero, and Howard Weber of Plantation, Florida, made a nice low-buck restomod out of his '64 by painting the engine compartment, valve covers, and air cleaner body color. Other upgrades during the resto include dual-reservoir power brakes, a dual exhaust, a custom color-matched steering wheel, and '57 Ford hubcaps. Paintucation's Kevin Tetz--now... Paintucation's Kevin Tetz--now probably more known for hosting Trucks! on Spike TV's Powerblock (www.powerblocktv.com)--was on hand to do several seminars on panel replacement techniques. It was a great opportunity to learn from one of the greats.
