Beautiful skies, packed stands, and a car show so full they had to park 'em in the main walking rows of the show. The economy might be on the skids, but Ford race and show fans turned out in droves for the season opener. Let's hope this is a sign our hobby will handle this downturn with aplomb.
The 8th Annual Nitto Tire Spring Break ShootoutIf there's one thing Florida is known for it's the abundant sunshine and average temperature in the 70s. Unfortunately, the NMRA Keystone Automotive Ford Nationals season opener, held in Bradenton, Florida, at Bradenton Motorsports Park every year in early March, often seems to get Florida's not so perfect weather patterns. From near rain outs where the NMRA staff has had to utilize pumps to drain the race pits, to heavy winds and cold temps dipping into the 50s, the last 5 years or so have not been kind to the Bradenton event. Surprisingly, it rarely hurts the racing side of the event; though these weather abnormalities do often hamper the car show part of the event, as well as the spectator count.
Coming into the 8th Annual Nitto Tire Spring Break Shootout, presented by Steeda Autosports, the weekend's weather was expected to be in the high 70s with partly cloudy skies and a gentle breeze. We haven't brought a display car for our subscription tent in a couple of years and when we saw the weather forecast it took us about a half-second to decide to drive our Factory Five Roadster to the event. The drive down was perfect and we had so many people stopping by to see the car it was hard to get away and actually cover the event! But somehow we managed and got some great photos of both racing action and the super-packed car show full of Henry's best products. Don Wheeler's '63 Falcon Futura Convertible

The Falcon doesn't always get the respect it deserves. Sure, people know that Lee Iacocca used it as the basis for his new sporty car, the Mustang. But before the Mustang stole the last lumen of limelight, the Falcon was Ford's better idea for a compact, lightweight vehicle with a palatable price tag. Don Wheeler, of Myakka City, Florida, purchased his round-nose from the second owner, who he himself purchased it from an estate sale to save it from being sold off for scrap. The drop-top Futura was solid; needing only a few small patches once the body was taken down to bare metal. Fresh paint came in the way of inspiration from Hot Rod magazine when Don saw a Willys painted Ruby Red Pearl, so he got the same hue for his Falcon.
As keen observers and Falcon-ites might have noticed by now, Ford didn't have a 302 in 1963, let alone in the Falcon. While the best you could have done was the 260 V-8, Don's was originally powered by the smart little 170ci inline six. Don essentially ditched the complete drivetrain for some spirited parts, starting with the 302 you see under the hood. Backing the 302 is a V-8 spec C4 auto trans, and at the tail end of the Falcon is an 8-inch five-lug rear from a Maverick, which Don tells us is direct bolt in. Granada discs up front, power assisted at that, help whoa the Futura down and aid in the five-lug upgrade up front as well. Before finishing off the engine Don added power steering for a smooth ride too.
Inside, Don upgraded from the Falcon's bench seat up front to a pair of '68 Mustang buckets covered in custom vinyl and cloth inserts. He also replaced all of the Falcon's original ivory dash knobs with early Mustang chrome versions. An aftermarket console helps hold cool drinks on those top down cruises in the Florida sun, while the power steering is aided by the aftermarket aluminum steering wheel. After 8 years of ownership Don still enjoys every minute behind the wheel. We would too if this clean Falcon Futura was in our garage.

Of course anything Ford powered...

Of course anything Ford powered can run Open Comp and that includes late-model Mustangs. When the dust settled after six rounds of finals Bruce Parker and his '82 Capri took the win over Dach Anderson and his '88 Mustang GT (shown here) with a 9.46 on a 9.30 dial to Dach's 12.54 on a 12.13 dial.

The Modular Muscle class is...

The Modular Muscle class is a popular destination for those who like to race Ford's overhead cam engine technology. While most entrants are factory modular installs ('96 and up Mustangs, Lincoln Mark VIII, and so on) there are some entries with modular conversions (Fox Mustang for instance). Two of the class favorites, Paul Svinicki and Susan Roush-McClenaghan, met up in the finals. Both are extremely precise behind the wheel of their race cars, but there can only be one winner and that was Paul, as Susan went -0.056 red.

While cruising the vendor...

While cruising the vendor midway we had a chance to visit with our old friend Harvey Baker at Performance Automatic. Somehow we missed PA's booth while running ragged at the PRI show last December, but nonetheless we were impressed to hear from Harvey that PA is now building the 5R55S five-speed automatic. Even better still, is that PA offers the trick electronic trans with a small-block bellhousing and a standalone electronics package to control the trans (image this baby in your classic Mustang or Fox Mustang with two overdrives!).

The season opener in Bradenton is always a great opportunity to pick up parts for your next project. The swap meet area is one of the biggest in the event series and we always see plenty of engines, transmissions, body parts, performance parts, and more.

As we mentioned in the opening text, our Project Snake Charmer made the trek down from Modified Mustangs & Fords World Headquarters for the weekend and was on display with our subscription agent's tent. Funny, our sister magazine's project Mustang didn't seem to get as much attention with our Tungsten Grey Roadster parked next to it. Sorry guys.

We've always liked Thunderbirds,...

We've always liked Thunderbirds, classic or modern, and one of our favorites from the latter is the MN-12 based 'Bird. Of those years, the most popular performance model has got to be the Thunderbird SC (Super Coupe) and Bryan Kaeser's modified SC is a great example.

Early Comets have a great...

Early Comets have a great history on the dragstrip, and Mike Penick's '65 Comet looks like it's ready for a track attack, but don't let the stance and the wheels fool you, the Comet can just as easily cruise with a decked-out small-block running a serpentine belt drive and a five-speed in the tunnel. Mike grabbed a Top 20 award, too

When we first walked by Steve...

When we first walked by Steve Marks' Mustang we thought "that's a clean Terminator," but then we spied the Shaker on the blown modular and we had to stop for a closer look. Steve's car is actually a Mach 1 (which answers our question about the Shaker) with an '03/'04 Cobra nose on it and the requisite deep dish hypercoat FR500s.

Walter Ledda trailered his...

Walter Ledda trailered his eat-off-it clean '93 notch to the show and it was full of great details. Check out the 18-inch Bullitts out back with widened wheel arches and modified body side moldings. The coupe also was decked out with black interior, custom gauge cluster, big brakes, and a carbed small-block between the smoothed inner fenders. Walter took home a Top 20 award for his efforts.

Just because it's called a...

Just because it's called a car show doesn't mean trucks aren't invited. Besides seeing some nice classic Ford trucks, a Ranchero, and more, the Gen 2 Lightnings are still as popular as ever and this trio all featured some great mods.
